In trouble? Hold F in combat to play dead, using blood collected from corpses. Enemies stop firing and come to check your body, then walk away. Get up once they’ve left, shoot from the ground, or tackle the one standing over you.
The Problem
When outnumbered in a *Red Dead Redemption 2* shootout, you have no choice but to fight to the bitter end or flee. There is no way to trick your enemies—even though playing dead is one of the oldest ruses in the Wild West.
What Does This Mod Do?
Collect blood from corpses, then—during combat—hold F (“Play Dead”): your character collapses, covered in blood; a pool of blood spreads beneath you, and you lie motionless on the ground.
Your enemies cease fire, and the nearest one approaches your body:
A stranger might crouch down and search your pockets, taking 15–30% of your money (accompanied by the game’s red “-$” notification), and may mock or insult your body. Otherwise, they simply check to see if you are dead.
A lawman never robs you: he aims at your body, confirms your death, and the police call off the search. Your bounty remains, just as if you had evaded justice.
Others search for a moment, then holster their weapons and walk away, believing you to be dead.
Blood Vial
Hold F while near a corpse (“Collect Blood”) to fill a blood vial. It is then stored in your satchel like any other item.
Playing dead consumes a vial. Without a vial, the “Play Dead” option does not appear.
Drinking the contents of a vial makes you sick… and knocks you unconscious.
While lying on the ground:
Wait for them to leave, then stand up and walk away.
Try to get back up. Any nearby enemies who spot you will open fire again. Aim, and your character automatically crouches to fire, using the game’s standard aiming system and reticle. Release the aim button without firing, and you lie back down.
The weapon wheel remains functional, allowing you to select which weapon to aim with.
When an enemy is nearby, press F (“Tap”). Startled, they step back, and your character pins them to the ground using the game’s grapple mechanic, accompanied by the usual prompts (and a knife strike if you are carrying a knife). Your character then retrieves their weapons, including both revolvers.
Been robbed? Kill the thief and loot their body to recover your money.

Requirements
ScriptHookRDR2 by Alexander Blade
Lenny’s Mod Loader (only for renaming the vial; without it, the mod still works, but the vial retains the name “Aged Pirate Rum”)
Installation
Drag PlayDead.asi and PlayDead.ini into your main Red Dead Redemption 2 folder (the same folder containing RDR2.exe).
Drag the “Play Dead – Blood Vial” folder into your game’s “lml” folder.
Open Lenny’s Mod Loader and ensure the “Play Dead – Blood Vial” option is enabled.
The vial’s name depends on your game’s language; after installing or changing the language, restart the game once to see the correct name.
Good to know
The Blood Vial replaces Aged Pirate Rum (a rare tonic) and retains its icon.
The “5/5” displayed on the vial in the item wheel refers to the number of sips of the original rum, not the number of vials you own.
Changing keys
By default, all actions are assigned to the F key. To use different keys, open the PlayDead.ini file and modify the PlayDeadInput, TackleInput, or CollectBloodInput settings to assign them to other game actions (examples are provided in the file).
Uninstalling
Delete PlayDead.asi, PlayDead.ini, and the “Play Dead – Blood Vial” folder inside “lml”.
Compatibility
This mod is only active when you play dead or collect blood; therefore, it should work with most other .asi mods. Mods that modify Aged Pirate Rum or significantly alter enemy AI may conflict; test them together, and if…
