AI Traffic Mod for Targa Florio ‘73 Ver. 4

AI Traffic Mod for Targa Florio

(NOTE: If you already have the full version 3 of the mod then all you need to bring it up to this new version 4 is the v3.a update file, available here).

Hello again Targa fans, here’s the latest update of the AI Traffic Mod for the Abulzz Targa Florio ’73. This one focuses primarily on making the driving behavior of the AI as realistic as possible, in terms of their speeds all along the entire road.

Previous versions were pretty accurate overall regarding AI speeds, but there were a lot of curves where the cars in the mod still took them too quickly, sometimes causing accidents and decreasing the immersion factor. Occasionally seeing things like a 1970’s Fiat sedan coming the other way, flying around a very tight downhill bend at 65 KPH / 40 MPH just never looked right.

In this update, each of the 800 or so curves in nearly 500 individual sectors, in both the clockwise and anti-clockwise directions of the track, has been manually analyzed to determine the most logical and realistic speeds in each of them for the style of AI traffic cars in the car pack.

The result now is a significant improvement in realism. The AI cars, in both directions, no longer take tight turns too quickly or wider turns too slowly. They now drive much more closely to how you’d expect actual “citizen” drivers should (at least, as well-behaved drivers should) on the winding roads of Sicily. The speeds on the straights have also been adjusted in the same way. All these values are included in an updated and extensive “ai_hints.ini” file.

(Although, don’t expect them to particularly care that you’re trying to overtake them. They’re not going to slow down just to let you by.)

There are two other items also included in the update:

* I’d overlooked that the add-on “civilian” driver models that the AI cars are specified to have were not actually included in the mod, so if you didn’t have those driver models already then the AI cars would use standard Kunos driver models with racing helmets, which certainly doesn’t look realistic. This update includes those add-on models.

* The optional “Nuzzi Clear Stopped AI” mod wasn’t working correctly in Track Day mode (Track Day mode is used for the AI Traffic mod). There’s a file that uses the wrong identifier for Track Day mode, so I’ve updated that and it now works as intended and stationary AI cars disappear much more quickly. I’ve included the updated file. It’s not included in the latest release of the optional Nuzzi mod as of yet, but I’ve tested it thoroughly and it works fine. More information on the Nuzzi mod is included in the AI Traffic Mod’s installation document.

So if you’ve a mind to, please check it out the AI Traffic Mod version 4 and let me know how it works for you. Grazie!
